About
Helen McCann

Helen McCann has been an educator for over 40 years: a university lecturer at a regional campus in Queensland, Australia, as well as developing indigenous education programs in remote areas of Central Australia. She has studied and taught groups of students who are new to universities and university culture - women, indigenous, students from non-metropolitan and low socioeconomic backgrounds, usually the first in their families to undertake university study. Rather than seeing these students as deficient, she positions them as presenting an exciting challenge to university teachers, to re-examine both their ways of teaching and the knowledges that they value. This study is based around stories written by such students in which they describe their experience of university study in embodied detail. Helen takes a poststructuralist approach to analysing their stories, and, in her discussion, demonstrates new ways of presenting knowledge by using poetry and drama.
