After retiring from a long engineering career in 2008 I moved from Somerset to the village of Vamos in the centre of the Apokoronas area of NW Crete. I was surprised to find it's beautiful countryside had been largely ignored by authors of other walking books. As I wanted to continue enjoying my walks in the countryside for relaxation and exercise I began venturing out into the surrounding countryside to find my own way around the many quiet tracks and lanes. As well as the many deadends I have found, I have also found many areas of very diverse and quiet countryside with superb views of beaches, mountains, panoramas, etc. that are unknown to most people, even those living within the Apokoronas area. After two years of exploring the whole region I wrote my two books. They describe the best 50 walks I have found around all parts of the Apokoronas area. I hope the reader will get as much pleasure from these walks as I have, as well as a little welcome exercise. Regards, Geoff
