The Ghost Worker is the story of the struggles, frustration, agonies, despair and degradation of jobless school leavers and university graduates in an economically distressed African country. As a result of the country’s dysfunctional educational system, majority of the school graduates are unskilled, unproductive and unemployable. The situation is compounded by the federal and state governments’ poor economic policies and the prevailing corruption among government officials, culminating in business closures, job losses, and worsening rate of poverty. Udeme, a Master’s Degree holder, is a metaphor for shattered dreams, wasted years, and total loss of interest in life itself. Although all hope is lost in the ability and sincerity of those in government to address the ugly situation, there are rays of hope in the possibility of individuals liberating themselves from the shackles and bondage of poverty through personal courage, determination, diligence and pragmatism.
The Ghost Worker tells the story of Udeme, the victim of a dysfunctional educational and economic system, compounded by the prevailing corruption in virtually all government departments, ministries and public corporations.
