After working with students for 30 years in school and clinic settings, this psychologist became aware of the complexity of assessing and diagnosing children and teenagers. It was easy for some providers to give a child or student a diagnosis and treat them, and sometimes the consequences were not good. This psychologist developed a mood inventory in 1997 that proved helpful to parents, students, and treatment providers in diagnosing and treating young patients. Over the ensuing years this provider saw treatment improvement with an increasing number of students. Some parents asked me to write a book about Cyclothymic disorder. When I saw the rate of child suicide increasing and more frequently reported in newspapers, I felt compelled to write this guide. My bout with cancer this past year gave me the window of time to write and edit this work.
