Philip Coyne had once desired to become a professional bassoonist, but now he is the Director of Customer Support at a software company and his girlfriend has dumped him at his own birthday party. Her parting remarks predicted three things for him: that by the end of the month, 1) Philip will have been fired from his job, 2) he will have seen a naked woman in the middle of the street, and 3) Northern California will have become its own state. Like Macbeth, however, Philip alone is responsible for his own fate, no matter what is predicted for him and the world. Office politics, company softball games, clashes with the Marketing Heads and Floor Managers all contribute to his discontent. Philip is frustrated, bored, lonely, and unsure of himself. In short, he is a fallible human being. A California Split is a work of humor for a Digital Age swarming with software bugs and viruses, Inbox-flooding e-mail, Instant Messages, and telephone support centers.
