An editorial/illustrative photographer in Toronto, Canada from 1982-1993, Rutherford made photographs for advertising and public relations campaigns and designed communications and public education materials for corporate clients, government agencies and environmental and social justice groups. Since withdrawing from commercial practice in 1993, Rutherford’s photography projects have been exhibited in solo and curated group shows in Canada, the US, New Zealand, France and Japan. Committed to raising public awareness of the power of visual communication and visual symbols to shape our personal metaphors, our social narratives and our perception of information, since 1992, Rutherford’s essays on photography, visual communication, advertising and ideological propaganda have featured in academic journals as well as in several North American newspapers and magazines.
