If you're a fan of Stephen King, Tony Hillerman and Joseph Campbell then you'll love Head Count. Adrian Truss has concocted a jambalaya of horror, crime, humour, suspense and mythology and it's delicious. Please sir, may I have more? Not being the writer Mr. Truss is, I will have to resort to the time worn cliche "It's a real page turner".

I have read this book twice now, and I can't help visualizing the movie. Or movies...? There is a lot going on in Truss Territory, plot-wise and character wise, and its complexity almost demands a second read. I find it a bit hard to classify this novel because there is so much in it--you find yourself caught up in a thriller/adventure (set in Navaho country in Arizona) and then you are laughing out loud, and then, out of the desert rock (literally) comes a couple of blood curdling, vengeful Demons--I don't like to make comparisons but it reminded me a bit of early Dean Koontz in that suddenly supernatural way, and I don't want to spoil it, but I caught myself sometimes rooting for the demons. Very colourful characters, big-hearted but somehow flawed heroes, hideous bad guys--it is not for the faint of heart (nor the sentimentalist). Again, with the second read I was clear about this author's dry wit--tongue often firmly planted in cheek, he takes you on a very wild ride.
