"Erosoterica." Many words and phrases relating to energy come to mind on reading the work of this author. 'Exuberance', 'joie de vivre', 'the categoric impulse to write'. Alas, not one of these does full justice. Perhaps this is just as well, since Esoterica, written in the author's maternal language -Brazilian Portuguese - does not overwhelm the reader, but captivates by a combination of its lyrical and contemplative qualities. One marveled at a certain pleasurable linguistic audacity in earlier books, written, 'con brio', with delightful idiosyncratic errors that took away nothing from their freshness. Here, the shoe is on the other foot (a suitable metaphor, considering the author's ballet career ! ), for it is the critic now, reading and responding to work written in a language not his own, but filled with a beauty of sound and rhythm. An example of this may be found on page 54, which features also a magical illustration of a girl at the center of a flower - one of... More > numerous examples of the author's art-work: Doce como o ouro da aurora, mais delicada que a flor de amora. Sob o sol,seu coracao se inflama, e fragil, ela abra a sua ama. One smiles on recognizing, in the title, a particularly apt play on the words 'Eros' and 'erotic' - a marked, and often vivid feature of the author's style. She takes the mythology of Classical times, in the guise of Eros and Aphrodite, and seemingly enlarges their role to cosmic proportions and significance. In her poetry, sustained in a variety of modes, one discerns the power of woman to subdue the unbridled creative force and achieve a civilized, complementary function. There are many memorable lines: Cada um, a seu modo, ao fazer o melhor que pode, engrandece a humanidade. Each one, in his own way, by doing his best, adds to the greatness of humanity.< Less
