As well as being an enthralling ‘page-turner’, Calling is an extremely well-researched tale of a young woman who has visions of the ‘goddess’, which prompts her to embark with three friends on a pilgrimage to shrines of the Virgin Mary in France. The novel raises important questions about the nature of religious experiences, whether they are real, how they might be interpreted, and the extent to which they offer guidance for life. Despite being a visionary, Frances — the heroine — has a routine office job, with difficult bosses, and receives uncanny guidance to resolve her problems. Other themes in the novel relate to friendship, sexuality and sexual orientation, and the quest for the goddess becomes a quest for one’s own identity. Chris Maunder’s novel is thought-provoking as well as ‘a good read’.
