Danny Davies' "A Rainbow Together" beautifully takes its name from Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno's song "Volare." The book also embraces another line from the song that really resonated with me: "Your love has given me wings." "A Rainbow Together" gives the reader an intimate glimpse into the many types of love as well as love's pains and fears. Set in Northern Kentucky during the "Freedom Summer" of 1964, the book provides the reader with a walk down memory lane, complete with highs and lows. Those of us who were of this era (I was born two weeks before "Volare" was) will chuckle, sigh and -- perhaps -- cry as we remember our youth, its challenges and its triumphs. If you enjoyed "The Way We Were" and "Cabaret," you'll love "A Rainbow Together."

Danny Davies paints a vivid portrait of the Freedom Summer (1964) through the eyes of young boy struggling to find some freedom for himself. I loved this book. I was 11 in 1964 and I remember the race conflicts and the woman's liberation movement. Mr. Davies also shows us a movement that was yet to happen and was overdue even back then. What does a young man about to embark on independence do with his gay leanings when no one's talking? His rigid Catholic upbringing places additional hurdles in his path as he explores what it means to be 17 and gay in 1964. This book will open your eyes and introduce you to characters you will not soon forget. I am eager to see what else this author produces.
