For the full review, visit: “Never Again” “Never Again” is the longest poem in the collection, spanning five pages. I’m highlighting this poem because of the way that it tells a complete story of religious exploration, from childhood, through puberty, into adulthood. Most people are not born with religion inside of them. Most people do not have a complete, inseverable bond with God or Buddha or whoever it is that they will eventually come to know and accept. Faith is a journey, and in this piece, Putzke shows us her journey to discovery, acceptance, and salvation. We see her struggles with faith beginning at an early age, times when she was “coloring roy g biv” (7). The most effective part of this for me was the discussion of sexuality, specifically conflicts she faced over masturbation and personal sexual discovery, as well as difficulties that arose in personal relationships with others. I think the reason that I love this poem so much is because it shows... More > that faith is hard and can be difficult or uneasy, but Putzke asserts that those things are worth it. It’s worth it to navigate the seas of religious awakening, however uncomfortable or painful those seas may be, in order to reach a higher level of knowledge and understanding, and while I am not religious, I can still appreciate the art that she’s created here and the message that she’s putting forth into the world.< Less

In her poems, the author paints Jesus in rich, bold hues. Like a master with a brush, she blends ordinary themes of God’s grace and love into new dimensions as we read her love letters to Jesus. Julia’s sincerity and childlike faith shines on the pages of this book. And she doesn’t hold anything back. Her naked writing covers topics like sexual immorality and conformity, and shows how God can make our ugly lives beautiful when we come to Him.
