Comparative Narratives is an exploration of memory within the family unit. I chose to develop this collection of family histories and shared experiences in the form of a cinematic montage as sequenced within the book. The family archive becomes key to my visual language, and working in tandem with the signified nostalgia the text and images are designed as if part of a moving space not unlike one's own memory.
In creating the text as a third person narrative I sought to enable readers to better enter the experiences of the characters. The story becomes somewhat non-linear as it moves in and out of each character’s recollection of events. The narrative of this project ultimately explores the connection of memory to trauma, as well as how we come to adopt our memories.
