Abstract How can creativity be fostered in a school setting? This paper examines creativity through the lenses of neurology, psychology, art, and education. With the end in mind: a creative and productive individual, this study reviews literature about the characteristics of such a person. Creativity is a result of the individual and the environment. A creative individual is characterized by persistent inquisitiveness, the ability to frame questions, and the ability to be alone. Creative individuals intimately know their specific domains and internalize the domain’s norms, which makes feedback instantaneous allowing creative people to work efficiently and produce prolifically. Modeling questioning techniques, encouraging note taking and drawing, and rewarding risk taking are techniques that educators can promote to foster creativity.
