Missa Unitatis By Antony Pitts

The first new mass setting to have been commissioned by the Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap (founded in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1318) in almost 500 years, and as such resonates strongly with the... More > sound, aesthetic, and intention of its noble forebears. Inspired by the Brotherhood's uniquely balanced membership - precisely as many Protestants as Roman Catholics (thus acknowledging the Church's need for unity while simultaneously exposing the present lack of it) - this 'Mass of Unity' is designed to be performed by two choirs separately and/or together. Somewhat in the tradition of Ockeghem's Missa Prolationum and Missa Cuiusvis toni, the conceit is that there exists an invisible source - an original score - of which the two versions are radically different editions, thus playing with the tension between intention and interpretation, original and modern notation. The musical magic is that these two versions can also be sung together. The difficulty level varies between movements from moderate to virtuosic.< Less

Seven Letters By Antony Pitts
Paperback: $9.81

The words of the Seven Letters from the Book of Revelation are over 1900 years old, yet speak with a remarkably contemporary voice. The Laodiceans, the last of the seven churches addressed, think... More > they are rich in worldly terms, but do not realize that spiritually they are “wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked”. Each of these letters is declaimed by a solo – at times virtuosic – voice (originally written for individual members of the ensemble TONUS PEREGRINUS and recorded on Hyperion CDA67507), and each letter ends with the urgent refrain: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches”. The cover painting is by David Jenks: 'Finale'.< Less

TEST QUESTIONS ON THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION AND ON ASSOCIATED GEO- AND COSMO-CHRONOLOGY The word ‘theory’ has two meanings. When used in the expression ‘the theory of... More > evolution’ it does not mean an idea which has yet to be tested and shown to be correct. The theory of evolution has long been taught to successive generations of school and university students as scientific fact, established beyond question. The danger is that consequently our acceptance of the theory is insufficiently deep and well-founded. The purpose of these test questions is to discover how thorough our understanding of the theory really is. We cannot, in all intellectual honesty, continue to accept the theory unquestioningly unless we address questions such as these and are confident that robust answers exist.< Less
Love bade me welcome By Antony Pitts, George Herbert

A setting for SATB(div.) of George Herbert's Love bade me welcome, commissioned by Edward Higginbottom to mark his retirement from New College, Oxford. "...from the moment I started working on... More > it, it was clear in my mind that this piece existed – complete, perfect, and (to me at least) unutterably beautiful and heart-rending. A murmur, a hue, a shadow, an outline, a pang – these are the beginnings of creativity that I’m aware of, but then I’m generally not aware of the real genesis of a piece of music, only sometimes – often they’re as impenetrable as forgotten dreams. When I do know I’m thinking about a (new) piece, I sometimes feel sure that I’m seeing or feeling it rather than hearing it. It – whatever it is – is amodal or multimodal, an Ur-expression of some deeper confluence of ideas or tangling of neurons..." http://antonypitts.klangr.com/work.aspx?ID=128390< Less

More > let these bars wander through my mind, or how often I’ve played them on the piano..." Gibbons’ exquisite tunes and rock-solid basslines for the first English hymnbook, Hymnes and Songs of the Church (published by George Wither with his hymn-texts in 1623), were written to be sung and played both at home and in church. In this practical and adventurous collection for choirs of all sizes and abilities (and accompanying the acclaimed TONUS PEREGRINUS recording on Naxos 8.557681), Gibbons' music has been realized by Antony Pitts and Alexander L’Estrange in a variety of styles, interleaved with new English hymns by themselves and two more Pitts brothers - James and John, and arranged in eight sequences following the Church’s liturgical year, each capped with a different Amen.< Less
Jerusalem-Yerushalayim vocal score By Antony Pitts
Paperback: $16.33

An oratorio for our times. The city of Jerusalem has a complex, multi-layered history stretching back thousands of years, and continues today to be the literal and symbolic focus of many, often... More > conflicting, aspirations. This oratorio traces the outlines of the Biblical story of the city through twelve windows or snapshots in which Jerusalem is either the subject or the background. The libretto is based as closely as possible (given the limitations of English translation, the transliterations of ancient Hebrew, and the musical setting itself) on texts from the Tanakh or Old Testament – texts which are both historical and prophetic, full of archetypes and resonances, and are at the same time about real people with their dreams, tragedies, and hopes. Ultimately, the story is a universal one of hope that extends from these Semitic roots to a vision of lasting peace for all people.< Less
