More > pause, or possibly even by other music or events in a service or recital. It takes as its starting-point the biblical concept of God's relationship with time and eternity - "with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day" - and incorporates a further patchwork of texts that refer both to Christ's first coming as a babe in Bethlehem two thousand years ago, and to His promised second coming at the end of the age. The first half of the motet is slow, the second a fast exploration of the same musical material. First performed at Westminster Cathedral on 17 & 21 December 2000, conducted by Martin Baker; duration: c.8'. A recording by TONUS PEREGRINUS directed by the composer is available on the album Alpha and Omega (Hyperion CDA67668).< Less

TEST QUESTIONS ON THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION AND ON ASSOCIATED GEO- AND COSMO-CHRONOLOGY The word ‘theory’ has two meanings. When used in the expression ‘the theory of... More > evolution’ it does not mean an idea which has yet to be tested and shown to be correct. The theory of evolution has long been taught to successive generations of school and university students as scientific fact, established beyond question. The danger is that consequently our acceptance of the theory is insufficiently deep and well-founded. The purpose of these test questions is to discover how thorough our understanding of the theory really is. We cannot, in all intellectual honesty, continue to accept the theory unquestioningly unless we address questions such as these and are confident that robust answers exist.< Less

What our forebears were and did can have a significant influence on what we are today. At the very least, we inherit their DNA. So the title of the book (with a nod to Descartes): Therefore we... More > are. This illustrated account of one branch of the Pitts family from the 1500s and of some of their relations also sheds light on aspects of our common social and military background which is unlikely to be found in the general history books. More > it, it was clear in my mind that this piece existed – complete, perfect, and (to me at least) unutterably beautiful and heart-rending. A murmur, a hue, a shadow, an outline, a pang – these are the beginnings of creativity that I’m aware of, but then I’m generally not aware of the real genesis of a piece of music, only sometimes – often they’re as impenetrable as forgotten dreams. When I do know I’m thinking about a (new) piece, I sometimes feel sure that I’m seeing or feeling it rather than hearing it. It – whatever it is – is amodal or multimodal, an Ur-expression of some deeper confluence of ideas or tangling of neurons..."< Less
