There is little basis for the Waitangi Tribunal Claims. There were nine copies of the Treaty made. Not all were signed by William Hobson, who suffered a stroke within a month of signing the first copy. There is also a fallacy, of who the early settlers were. A lot of convincing evidence has been hidden from the public that it was not the Maori who first arrived on the shores of New Zealand. Records are restricted until 2063 in terms of the Archives Act. Hongi Hika was New Zealand’s most famous warlord and fearless Maori warrior, who lived and died by the sword. He fought, defeated and displaced other neighbouring and even distant tribes. His daughter, Hãriata Rongo married Heke Pokai, also called Hone Wiremu Heke Pokai or more commonly Hone Heke. Heke was the first Ngāpuhi chief, of 143 other Ngāpuhi chiefs, to sign the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840. More > secondary objective is the need to have a companion for my Littlewood Waitangi Treaty (2018) and Mangungu Hokianga books (2019). Full copyright credit is given to the Te Ara and NZ History websites for the Ngā tohu – treaty signatories charts. The abbreviations, layout, indexing and formatting errors are mine. The only significant contentious issue, in the writers opinion, concerns the interpretation, understanding and translation of the word “sovereignty” – as used and understood in the Declaration of Independence and the ‘Treaty of Waitangi’ – in that those chiefs who signed both agreements retained Sovereignty with the Declaration but ceded it when they signed the ToW. However, most would argue that there are fundamental differences between the final English draft and Maori translated Tiriti o Waitangi.< Less
