When I entertained the idea of writing about Tonga's history through a fictional genre it both excited and daunted me - I knew if I was to write historical fiction I would need to get the facts right. So I spoke to many elders and historians, visited places of interest, spent a fortune on purchasing every publication on Tongan and Polynesian history and dedicated time to commence work on what seemed a megalithic task. The time period I chose for A Providence of War was key to my inspiration. The 12th century was a time confirmed as a highly successful period in Tongan influence far and wide; the "Tongan Empire" has always been a point of pride with Tongans and I've hoped to reflect that in the story.
