Amikor kivándoroltam az Újvilágba, azt hittem, hogy tudok... More > angolul. Amerika földjén a Bevándorlási Hivatal tisztviselőjével beszéltem először.
-Tcsanéj sza?-szegezte nekem.
Azt hittem, hogy csak azért nem értem, mert déli akcentussal beszél. Egy év után rájöttem, hogy a mondat így hangzott volna artikulálva: “What’s your name sir?”
Értetlenségemre többször is megismételte a kérdést, majd megváltoztatta a hanghordozását és lassan, szótagolva kérdezte, mintha hülyével volna dolga:
"Do you speak Eng-lish?"
"I do. Do you?"
Nem volt humorérzéke. A beléptetés elhúzódott, a Los Angeles-i csatlakozást lekéstem.
- Ha már New York-ban ragadtam, körülnézek - gondoltam. Két óra múlva egy félelmetes alakokkal zsúfolt utcában találtam magam kirabolva.
