Aside from their familiar use in the service at the opening and closing of the Ark,
two verses from the sedra... More > B’ha’alot’cha are unique. For, in the majority of Torah scrolls Bamidbar l0:35-36 is encased between two critical marks, each taking the form of an inverted nun, as if they are in parenthesis. Rabbi Y’hudah Hanasi said this is because it is an important book standing by itself. Sofer Sta”M Marc Michaels examines this unique visual midrash and provides a commentary that attempts to explain why Sefer Binsoa should be considered important and what lessons it might hold for us today. If a person is defined by his occupation then I'm as much a split personality as Clark Kent and Superman, but don't have a curl in the middle of my forehead. By day a mild-mannered civil servant working as Director of Direct and Relationship and Evaluation for the COI (Central Office of Information) trying to persuade the great British public to do what is right and improve the quality of their lives. For my Clark Kent role, oddly I don't wear glasses. By night (and Sundays) however, a very different story. Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a Jew, no it's Soferman. Writing and repairing STaM for shuls in the UK and Europe. Want to know more about that? Visit my website at www.sofer.co.uk. For this role, completely the opposite to Superman, I do sometimes wear glasses - all the close work and my lenses go swimming. And in my spare time (though I don't have a lot of it) I write books under the Kulmus Publishing imprint. Some funny, some serious. Buy them you might llike them.
