As of 2008 76-83% of Americans claim affiliation with Christianity (opposed to 33% for the rest of the planet). The majority... More > of the children of such Americans hear the Biblical story of the creation of the universe found in Genesis as their first explanation of where we come from. Predictably, this creates a conflict for children (who tend to be concrete thinkers). The questions begin when they start watching The History Channel on TV or enter school and discover that dinosaurs preceded the Bible story of creation by many millions of years. This book seeks to answer the important question of where we come from with science, not mythology. If truth is important to you then this is the information you need to provide your children to give them the tools they need to thrive in modern society. < Less

What do you say when your child asks you, “where do we come from?” Most Americans claim Christian affiliation so most... More > tend to respond with the Biblical story of creation. Religion is a part of our history and it plays an enormous role in American culture, but truth is important and there is a big difference between belief and knowledge. ‘Truth’ is what this book is all about. Although it touches briefly on speculation about the existence of the soul and how some cultures deal with this issue, the primary intent is to provide facts based upon what humans KNOW about our universe rather than what we believe. If you are one who feels uncomfortable with a discussion about evolution and the big bang that created our universe 14 billion years ago, this book is not for you. If you are one who values facts over mythology though, you are likely to embrace the information with relief and wonder why it took so long for someone to address this controversial topic in such a straight-forward manner. < Less

A MONK WITHOUT A MONASTERY - An Examination Of Self-Discovery
By Michael Jaquish
Paperback:
$17.95
Ships in 3–5 business days
“We are here to understand why we make the choices we make.”
What does it mean to be human? How can we learn to... More > vanquish our ego and release our compassionate spiritual essence? This book poses questions and suggests answers while examining how human beings are capable of genocide on one hand and godlike compassion on the other. Growing numbers of human beings believe we have the potential to evolve in spiritual awareness as a species and produce a more compassionate world. Only time will tell but ‘time’ may be running out. One thing is certain, positive change will not happen without knowledge, effort and vision. Ignoring the horrors of ‘humanity-defining’ moments like war and genocide reinforces negative historical patterns of behavior that are growing in number and ferocity. We can create a new reality and make a difference but we need the tools to do so. This book is a toolbox for self-realization and positive action. < Less |

Michael Jaquish is a practicing Buddhist of the Tibetan Mahayana tradition following the path of the Bodhisattva. He is also a poet, an artist, a novelist and a journalist. Following a career as a peace officer in America he traveled to West Africa to serve as director of security for US Embassy operations in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Gambia and for the NASA Space Shuttle Abort Landing site. In his spare time, Michael spent many years roaming the jungles in search of adventure and exotic creatures and sketching and writing about what he found. Michael has published over fifteen books drawing upon his studies of Buddhism, his fertile imagination and his experience with international security consulting and training. He currently lives among the tall fir trees in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest where he continues to write and ponder the meaning of life while striving to find a balance between practicing compassion for all beings and making people safe in an unsafe world.
