Being brought up with two girls for ten years must have left its mark on him, for it seems to him and me at the time that he was always the one to get picked on whenever anything bad happened. His dad had a piece of pit belting, not a belt to hold up his trousers, a piece of conveyor belt about two inches wide and two feet long that he used to smack their backsides with, well his at least. I mean, I never recall his sisters being smacked and anyway he was always told that in his family 'Males do not hit females' So his sister's probably ended up with slapped legs and he was the one who got the belt on his backside and when his dad said "I'll leather thy arse till tha can't sit darn for a week" he meant it. The poor lad couldn't sit down for a fortnight never mind a week. < Less

Back in the 1980's long before computers made genealogy what it is today.
I spent more hours in various Records Offices, Libraries looking through census returns and parish records, climbed over more gravestones in more cemeteries than I care to remember, resulting in this book.

I hit a brick wall with my Knowles ancestors when I got back to the 1770's.
Not being able to go back, I decided to branch off sideways, and look into some of the families connected to my family through marriage.

This book contains 13 Family Trees with hundreds of names, dates, births, marriages and deaths of families from the Huddersfield/Barnsley and other areas of Yorkshire, England. Including some families who emigrated to the USA and Australia.

All the families are connected to each other and together they make up a Yorkshire Family Genealogy. < Less

Worsdale Mine in Yorkshire owned by Lord Greenbarugh employed 350 men, women, boys and girls some as young as 7 years of age.
The mine only some 240 yards deep, being entirely lit by candles was not considered dangerous because it was well ventilated naturally by air being drawn into the mine through number ‘2’ shaft which had no headgear and was situated on the hill 500yards from the main number ‘1’ shaft.
The miners were lowered underground by means of a cage suspended by ropes over the headgear and powered by a horse gin.
At the time of the disaster there were approximately 150 workers underground. < Less

Peter Knowles born 1949 in Barnsley,Yorkshire England and is still living there.
I joined the British Army way back in 1966 at the age of just seventeen, served eight years, first with The York & Lancaster Regiment in Cyprus then with The Duke of Wellingtons Regiment in Hong Kong.
I decided to write a book about it 'Once Upon a Time in the Army' read it, it will make you laugh if nothing else.
Tried many jobs since then, you name it I have probably done it.
Then twenty plus years ago I picked up a joblot of cheap books and became a Bookseller, now recently retired I finally became an Author, not sure whether that was a good idea or just a natural progression from one to the other.
