This edition presents for the first time the original full-size laser master of Richard Cook’s 1995 LTBA 18.2 monograph.... More > In this typographically complex and copiously illustrated study, the original signification of the Chinese 辰 chén pictogram is demonstrated from graphic, semantic, and phonological perspectives. On the basis of an examination of the extant Chinese material from all historical periods, it is shown that the 辰 chén sign is in fact a representation of a scorpion in striking position as seen in profile. It is shown that this representation bears directly upon the once vigorous traditions relating to the ancient equinoctial position of the star Antares in the Breast of the Celestial Scorpion. And though certain stellar concepts betray the likelihood of an early (pre-OBI) Sino-Mesopotamian relation (stimulus diffusion), these concepts nevertheless took peculiar Chinese form, such that it is possible to demonstrate the cognacy of Chinese 辰 chén and ‘scorpion’ words in Sino-Tibetan. < Less

STEDT Monograph #9 is a high-resolution edition of 《說文解字 ‧ 電子版》 Digital Recension of the Eastern Hàn... More > Chinese Grammaticon, by Richard S. Cook (Doctoral Dissertation, UC Berkeley, Dept. of Linguistics, 2003). This work, the first-ever reconstruction of a complete Shuo Wen (121 AD) Urtext, presents the results of more than a decade of effort directed at elucidating the major findings of the principal Qing Dynasty commentary edition (Duan 1815). In four-volumes (2,400 pages), this monograph situates the 19th c. findings firmly in the context of traditional and modern Chinese lexicography, with complete mappings to important lexica, and Old and Middle Chinese readings. Volume 1 documents the recension and phonological findings; Volumes 2 and 3 contain the concordance data, source mappings, and readings; Volume 4 (newly available) contains the complete reconstructed Shuo Wen Urtext typeset in Seal Script (vertical text, right-to-left). Each of the four volumes must be ordered separately. < Less
