Steve Levitt is a multi-instrumentalist and Southern Appalachian percussive dancer. He has performed with the Apple Chill Cloggers of Chapel Hill, NC and was artistic director, choreographer and performer with Dueling Shoes, a Southern Appalachian percussive dance ensemble. Steve has been a member of the Artists in Schools programs in Wake, Durham and Cumnberland counties in North Carolina. The story/book "Journey to the Mountain-A Roots Tale" was performed as an educational program in elementary schools using music, song and dance to teach history.
Steve's current performances are centered around the West African Akonting, a direct ancestor of the American banjo. He performs a poem/story using a variety of instruments (West African drum, Akonting, bones, fiddle, banjo, Hambone and percussive dance) to teach about the roots of the banjo. Songs, with audience participation, come from Africa and slave plantations, including shouts and spirituals. More at www.duelingshoes.com
