Waliakbar Muhammad (FKA Emerson Brandon) started as a photojournalist in the 1960s in Washington, DC. He documented the first ever “Muslim Parade” in 1969. By February 1970, Muhammad’s photos of Elijah Muhammad made the cover of “Muhammad Speaks.” He subsequently moved to Chicago where he freelanced for Chicago Defender, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press and United Press International. About 1972 he joined the editorial staff of Muhammad Speaks and was asked by Elijah Muhammad to visit temples throughout the USA to document Muslim progress – these photos appeared in the publication’s “Progress Section.” After 1975 he remained on staff of: Bilalian News, World Muslim News, American Muslim Journal, and AM Journal, serving as editor from 1981 through 1985, before relocating to Atlanta. He is founder of the Brandon Institute, and at age 70+ is working to produce a series of multi-media documentaries on “American Muslim Life." INTERVIEWS / PRESENTATIONS: 404-931-8140.
