Imagine Devon

ImagineDevon is an urban design studio offered by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This studio and related support courses contribute to the Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures initiative (BLC) between University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and Madison focusing on the study of the cultural landscapes of the Upper Midwest within a global perspective. Seven students enrolled in this elective studio studied how the physical and social environment along Devon Avenue, Chicago sustained multiple immigrant cultures. In addition to ethnographic research, students also compiled archival and population data from Chicago-area depositories. Understanding how the physical environment accommodated social diversity and mixed-use neighborhoods allowed the students to develop their vision and interventions for this street over a sixty-year period.
