From the Preface: "On March 25, 2007, I enlisted in the United States Army. After barely a week of actual training at Fort Benning, Georgia, I suffered a back injury which effectively ended my training and led to my discharge on June 25, 2007. ...This book began completely unintentionally, and originally as a letter home to my wife. Some thirty pages in, however, I realized perhaps God intended it for something more. If you have ever seen a classic patchwork quilt, you will understand what I mean when I say you hold in your hands the literary equivalent. Much like a segment of a quilt, each individual reflection within this book stands on its own and tells its own story. When viewed as a whole, however, as a sum of ecclectic parts, a grander picture emerges, a picture I myself am able to view only now that it is complete."
