It took a while, but come his thirtieth birthday Eric had reason to smile. Just in the past year he’d received a promotion at Norwich Savings Bank and bought a new home in Topsfield, Massachusetts. There he lived with his son Sean, now six, and wife Kathleen, whom he had married a year after his son’s birth. With Kathleen 8 and ½ months pregnant with their second child, things could only get better. It only made sense to him. He’d paid his dues, and now nothing could go wrong. Two weeks later, everything went wrong. Complications from childbirth left Sean and his newborn sister, Morgan, without a mother, and Eric without his wife.
