Greg Matthews lives day after day under the lash of inhuman guards. Doing pointless and back-breaking labor for no other purpose than to demean and oppress. Things take a turn for the even more cruel and usual as Jasper, the whimsical madman that lords himself over the community of damned souls, eyes Greg for a special project. Each year a tournament of death is held with the workers as competitors. The winner in the end is allowed to return to the life they lived before. Free. Jasper loves a rigged game and wants Greg to fight on his behalf. Make Greg do terrible things he never thought himself capable of. For his victory, Jasper would allow not only Greg, but all of his friends to leave with him. The catch being that should he fail, Greg and the lot will have to endure a new level of suffering beyond any of their imaginations. With more than just his own eternal soul in the balance, Greg must step up and become at least a fraction of the lunatic pulling his puppet strings. Or lose it all trying...
