Threads

Renée Gramont’s young heart is broken by tragedy during the Franco-Prussian war. We follow this soon-to-be matriarch as she leaves the streets of Paris hoping to forget the horrors she has witnessed there. As a new immigrant to America, she finds herself empowered by learning the dressmaking trade while simultaneously threatened by the male-dominated world of the 1870s. Her marriage, although ill-fated, begins the long line of passionate women who fill the pages of Threads. Renée’s descendants move through the worlds of dressmaking, tool design, the stock market, Jazz, winemaking, and computer technology but remain bound by the heart threads, like Ariadne’s tied to Theseus, that Renée carefully put in place to connect them through the years.
