©TX 849-444 John Blake (Bowman) has decided to take a vacation from the rigors of exploring unknown space and tracing down ancient civilizations. His Ship dumps him at a boarding house on the world of Hannibal where he meets a young widow, Vicky Malone. What she and the computer, ONE, get into is enough for a complete book. They explore old earth and the empire, digging up John's past which upsets him. ONE tells her of John's past wars and introduces her to the slave society of New Rome. She meets the hives and rides the Big Ships to the delight of the Insectoids and Hippoids.
