I was offered a job in Alaska repairing marine radios. When I arrived I was taken into the wilderness as a watchman at a gold mine.
My new friends taught me their Alaska ways. One friend taught me about Tlingit myths that including Kah Lituya that caused an earthquake, a sacred bug that I stepped on that caused a man to die, and how the raven created the world.
I learned to fish for salmon, halibut, how to dig for clams how to pick abalones, and to prepare and cook all this seafood.
I witnessed wildlife that included deer, bears, and eagles.
While learning Alaska ways I was given the name Cheechako, which means I was a green horn.
