Jalaa Writers Collective
Jalaa is an endangered language of north-eastern Nigeria (Loojaa settlement in Bauchi State) of uncertain (possibly Niger-Congo) origins. It is nearly extinct; the ethnic group has come to use the Bwilim dialect of Cham in daily life, and the few remaining speakers of Jalaa, all elderly, are much more fluent in Cham than in Jalaa. Jalaa is a name steeped in tradition and history, but it is now endangered. We have all read stories about the endangered flora and fauna of Africa. We should all take a moment to stop and ponder on the endangered publishing industry within our immediate environment and how it is impacting on creativity and writers. After a couple of brainstorming sessions, the ten writers who started this collective settled on the name JALAA. The collective has published four books, three of which can be purchased on the Amazon Kindle.
