On a world deprived of sunlight for more cycles than anyone can remember, the remaining population strives to survive in a harsh, barren landscape. On this world that has never known any form of religion or superstition, odd things begin to occur, when a young girl, Modesta, lost and alone, happens upon a run-down hovel occupied by a man in not much better shape than his home, named Jhero. All that is left of his parents small farm, is a dying garden. Jhero and Modest embark on a journey where they encounter a flying insect that can speak. A race of beings living underground, seemingly related to Hrules, a pack animal. They also encounter deadly animals and a giant predatory bird called a Zrax, and other creatures thought to be long dead. Their journey takes them to a mountain top to search for a device that might save their dying world. If, they survive the cold winter and the betrayal of a man named Yanest.
