I Remember Those Days

Maysville is still on the map, on the Kentucky bank of the Ohio, and more of it is standing than you would guess. The Russell is still on Third Street. Caproni's is still at the foot of Rosemary Clooney Street, and you can sit by the window tonight and watch the river go by. That is the easy part. The rest of what this book is about is not on any street. This is a portrait of the Maysville that the people who grew up there still carry around: a transparent pudding from Magee's; a lemon sour at a drugstore counter; the Saturday trip to Merz Bros. and the Friday loop across the bridge to Frisch's and Jerry's; skate night at the rink; the pools, Beechwood and the sledding hills; being born at Hayswood; the tobacco patch and the warehouse sale in November; the Carnation whistle at noon; the afternoon in July of 1980 when the ground moved; and the floods, told the way they were told to you. Forty chapters, built from what the people who grew up in Maysville actually remember. The names are real and the streets are real. Where the town remembers a thing two different ways, and it often does, this book says so instead of picking a winner. For anybody who grew up in Mason County, or left it and never quite finished thinking about it.
