Almost half of all Americans report having changed their religious moorings during their lifetime. For Hugh MacLean Bower, the change was an intimate and difficult decision that upended his apparently comfortable and successful world – though deep down inside he had been squirming. His autobiographical storytelling weaves his personal life and career into the 180-degree turnaround in his spiritual understanding. He grew up in New York City, enjoyed the comforts of the corporate world, then found a fresh direction as a cattle rancher in Texas. His transformation took him from the insecure darkness of a religion anchored in guilt, fear and worry to a religion with the sunshine of forgiveness, compassion and love. “I hope that by sharing my story, my transformation will help others find a church that best fits them. Rather than waiting to judge and punish me, the God I met in the Bible loved me and was rooting for me,” Bower said.
