THE INVADING GOSPEL

Jack Clemo (1916-1994), a distinguished British poet, became a Christian only after a great deal of spiritual turmoil and a lapse into paganism during his early years. The Invading Gospel traces his spiritual development and clearly sets forth the firm beliefs which have guided him through most of his life. Clemo went through a period of self-imposed exile during his teen years because he felt isolated by an intense need to find a personal approach to faith. Although he believed in Christianity in an abstract way, he felt that there was an unresolvable conflict between Christian theology and his own poetic temperament. “I did not doubt Christianity — I merely disliked it; or rather, I disliked its facade, while being conscious that behind the facade there was some tremendous secret which
