History has always shown that before any pandemic, regardless of what it is, there are sporadic epidemics of other infectious diseases, such as smallpox and yellow fever. Historians agree, because of unsanitary conditions for so many years, it helped lay the groundwork for the most infamous infectious disease, Black Death. Afterwards, the rise of epidemics and pandemics have continued into the 21st century, without a sign of reprieve. This century may be the worst, due our increasing immunity to antibiotics that revitalize germs and the ongoing threat of biological terrorism. With three pandemics, influenza, plague and AIDS, last century, and a few new diseases such as Ebola and Creutzfeld-Jakob, greater strains of the old ones, such as, smallpox typhoid, and malaria––are not only holding their own, but appear to be waiting for a break in the defense link. Spend some time and learn about the world’s most dreadful and scariest moments, particularly the body count.
