One day, Oliver, who is just recovering from an intense relationship with a painful and bitter end, finds with great surprise a yet unknown gorgeous girl standing at his door. Alice reveals she has come to New York from West Virginia to meet him and cheer him up. Stunned, Oliver is moved by her good feelings and grace, and invites her to stay in his apartment. Her mother, Gertrude, who has discretely followed her to New York, tries in many different ways to find out what is going on between the two. Alice's father, George, has followed in turn his wife and wants to bring her back home. All these encounters are the occasion for discussions on the question of romantic love to which each one provides his/her own answer. At the end, Oliver, who is full of doubts and much disillusioned, takes note of the loneliness of living beings and their perennial search for love.
