Is anyone there? In this slim pairing of two personal essays, Matthew Meriwether writes a letter of sorts—tormented, elegiac, and full-blooded—to a person (or people) who broke his heart. Both a queer coming of age story, and a lament for the loss of a relationship, Knock Knock is a non-linear, head-first dive into the anxieties of unrequited intimacy. The first essay “Three Eggs,” recounts the personal history of the writer’s relationship with an unnamed boy, first a friend, then something more. “Knock Knock,” shows the writer returning to the place where the relationship blossomed and died, in a moment of reckoning, theft, and an attempt at an ending. Knock Knock will take you inside the beating heart of Meriwether’s idiosyncrasies, quirks, and darkness. Reading it feels like peeking inside of the author’s own journal. That is, until he is addressing you directly, implicating the reader as if you were the one to do him wrong.
