Dundee,Scotland,1830. The hero, David Cole, is employed as a private tutor to the daughters of Mr. Jackson. When he falls in love with one of the daughters, he is booted out of the house by the irate father. Faced with destitution, he is forced to sign on a whaling ship bound for Greenland, where he faces the raw, brutal life of a seaman on one of the world's most dangerous oceans. He is shipwrecked and cast ashore on the Greenland coast, to be rescued by an Inuit, (Eskimo) hunter. This is a fast-moving, dramatic novel with lots of British humour, graphic descriptions of the Arctic and life at sea. The author has been a professional seaman for many years.
