She walked into the auditorium certain she would win. He was already there, in a coat that cost more than her rent, and instead of taking her apart he said, most of what she just said is true — and sat down. She is twenty-seven, brilliant, and a lapsed Catholic. He is fifty-one, a Tamil engineer from the Detroit suburbs, a late convert who moonlights doing standup at a brewery. Neither expects the other.
