During World War II, school teacher Maria Celeste meets a British army officer after the liberation of a small town called Umbertide. They discover a shared love of art and he promises to take her to Rome.
Two of her favourite pupils, Massimo and Giovanni reminisce about their days in a sanctuary deep in the Umbrian hills. They miss fellow refugee Livia and plan to visit her at her home in Spello.
Meanwhile, the Nazi informers Cesare and his sister Vincenzia are preparing to flee across Hitler’s latest defensive line in the north of Italy.
But time is about to interfere with each of these plans.
Will they ever become aware that the stories of their lives are to unfold across different periods, past, present and future?
It may be better not to.
