This is the story about a young man's coming of age in the American Midwest during the dawn of the digital era. Daniel Mayes and his friends long for more than their small Missouri town can offer--and they are willing to search high and low for anything pure. During his high school years, Dan questions the values of his upbringing and winds up in a crowd of outcasts and rebels. He finds his passion through rock and roll and has his first experiments with substances. He has his first awkward sexual encounters, and he learns about heartbreak. He works a fast food job so he can pay to gas up his car, and he is forced to cope with tragedy. He even makes his own decisions about faith. These episodes in Dan's life focus on the moments of youth that shape and define us, but which often get buried away. Dan's mission goes beyond merely surviving his childhood. He sets out to discover what to do with his life to give it real meaning. Only then can he fly off.
