Writing, like nature, has always been a source of comfort and joy for me. After designing and delivering environmental education courses, special events, and workshops for over a decade, developing the Blue Marble Series for readers to explore the most mysterious and vast places on Earth really felt like an organic next step for me. In 2006, whenI became a certified scuba diver in Vietnam, the ideas for the Blue Marble Series slowly began to bubble up to the surface. While I love to spend time mountain climbing or camping in the woods, I've never felt more at peace with nature or in awe of it than I have while diving. My very first experience taught me about coral bleaching with my own eyes. Sadly, each trip I continued to take, these haunting images appeared again and again -- in the Phillippines, Bali, and off the coast of Guangdong, China, where I lived for 6 years. Given that life in the ocean is most vulnerable to climate change impacts (in addition to a long list of other human activities), I felt driven to create a story that helps more people understand the relationship between the sea and land. Diving 10 meters or more under the sea is not for everyone. So, I created the Blue Marble Series as an alternative (or supplement) to the experience of deep ocean immersion. The fictional elements of the adventures are there to delight your senses and spur your imagination as to how life below sea level can intertwine with life above.
