Cheryl Stephens has spent more than three decades transforming how the world writes and reads. Trained as a lawyer, she became Research Director of the Plain Language Project at the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia in 1990, where she discovered that dense legal language was failing the very people it was meant to serve. That discovery launched a career devoted to clear, accessible communication. In 1993, Stephens co-founded what became the Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) with Kate Harrison Whiteside, and she went on to co-chair the organization's first three international conferences. In 2011, she co-created International Plain Language Day, now marked every October 13 around the world. And in 2019 she founded and became Patron of PLAIN Canada CLAIR to champion clear language across Canada in both English and French. Her advocacy within the Canadian Bar Association helped bring plain language principles into legal practice.
