Named the Top Graduating Senior in the Class of 2002, Hunter graduated summa cum laude with a BA in History from the University of the District of Columbia. He is also a graduate of the Rainier Writing Workshop, the MFA in Creative Writing at Pacific Lutheran University. A retired social studies teacher, Hunter is the author of nine books, and resides in North Puyallup, Washington.
