James M. Hatch
James M. Hatch is an educator, researcher, and practitioner passionate about international education and Japanese Budō (武道). Born in Ireland, raised in Canada, and matured in Japan, he has worked globally across diverse cultural and educational contexts. James holds a doctorate in International Education and brings over thirty years of experience in K–12 leadership, teaching, and programme development in international schools. Alongside his career in education, James is a dedicated practitioner of Budō, focusing on Karate, Kobudō, and Iaidō. He is the founder of Tōshinkai (東心会), a small, purpose-driven group devoted to the holistic practice of Japanese martial arts—emphasising the integration of mind, body, and spirit. His commitment to kaizen (continuous improvement) shapes his leadership and martial arts journey. James has travelled widely across Asia to deepen his understanding of kata, especially within the Chitō-Ryū tradition. His writing and research explore the intersections of education, culture, and martial philosophy, strongly focusing on fostering intercultural competencies and global-mindedness in young learners. He is guided by the Japanese proverb: 「立派な人の背中を見て育つ」— we grow up watching the backs of great people.
