I spent three and half years (July 2012 to December 2015) reading, thinking, and writing. It was a kind of self-directed learning sabbatical—42 months to go wherever my curiosity took me next, from one interesting footnote or reference to another. A season of full-time contemplation. Much of this period was spent in cafes and libraries. During this stint, I published missives daily, which was rather unsustainable in the long run, but made for a wonderfully intense chapter of learning. My effort to make the Caesura Letters a viable, longterm career path came up short. In retrospect, I was clearly too focused on research and writing to effectively manage the marketing side and promotional side of the project as a business. All the same, I look back at this period with much fondness. Personally, Caesura Letters occupies a transitional phase in my career, wedged in between the transition from the non-profit sector to academic research support. I count myself beyond lucky to have had the economic privilege to spend a year and a half surrounded by ideas and books. I wish everyone could invest in their own autodidactic, generalist interests and feed their curiosity in this way. I still find myself recalling the themes and topics I explored here. The complete set of the Caesura Letters are available as they were published in paperback, across fifteen volumes. These volumes were originally released quarterly as they were written, beginning in 2012. — James Shelley
