Mimi Tierney
Mimi Tierney is an artist and high school art educator residing in Charleston, South Carolina. She is a graduate of Winthrop University and is pursuing her Master’s at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her art and teaching pedagogy center around personal and shared experiences through narrative and research based art-making. Her mixed media practice blends layers of writing, drawing, painting, collage, and textiles. When she is not in her studio or classroom, you can find Mimi combing beaches for sharks’ teeth or racking up another game of 8-Ball. 20-SOMETHINGS Statement A struggling twenty-something herself, Tierney unravels her own experiences with this decade of discovery through art, poetry, and conversation. Using her mixed media approach, this body features watercolor painting, linoleum stamping, digital embroidery, collage, reflections, photography, pattern block printing, personal poetry, and digital painting. Taking the collective form of an artist book, 15 “Titles” are introduced to define the roles women seek, embrace, or are given during their twenties. The “Titles” were created by pulling commonalities between responses from a survey sent to women in their twenties during the Spring of 2023. The responses were then turned into watercolor portraits serving as snapshots into each woman’s life. 20-SOMETHINGS is a guide book for unsuspecting teens and questioning twenty-somethings.
