As a medical missionary to Guatemala, the author discovered many fascinating facts and legends about the Maya, including their belief that the Tzutujil Maya were considered the original settlers of the area, despite their primitive architecture and lack of complex cultural features. Learning the language, he realized that some terms were credited to ancient Visitors, who informed them about Earth and Venus orbiting the Sun, and told them many things which were not to be shared with outsiders. Discovering Anne LaBastille's book, "Mama Poc," he knew that he had to include her story in whatever he wrote about the real reason the Maya had such advanced knowledge.
