YOU THINK IT BEFORE YOU DO IT

Renewing Your Mind to Reclaim Your Destiny

Most of us know — though we rarely say it in quite these terms — that who we are in unguarded moments is not always who we intend to be. This book starts there. Not with a programme for fixing it, but with the more uncomfortable question of why it keeps being true despite genuine effort to change it. What I kept seeing, in session after session with people who really wanted to be different, was that they were addressing the wrong level entirely. The place most of us try to change — behaviour, speech, the outer life — is not actually where change begins. What shows up on the surface forms much earlier, in thought patterns a person rehearses so many times that they stop registering as thoughts. They become, instead, the background noise of a person’s inner life — unexamined, unquestioned, governing it without ever being named. Romans 12:2 calls this the renewing of the mind. It is not a new idea. It is, if anything, an idea so familiar in Christian circles that it has lost some of its force — which is part of what this book is trying to recover. Seven chapters trace real marriages and difficult thought patterns back to their roots, and lay them open before the God who knows them better than we do. The people in these pages are not case studies. They are the kind of people who leave Sunday’s service unchanged by it. If that is familiar, I wrote this work with you in mind.
